Rita Dominic, Kate Henshaw, Others To Light Africa’s Tallest Xmas Tree In Calabar

 The ancient city of Calabar, Cross River State will be lightened this Saturday when some Nollywood stars led by Rita Dominic and Kate Henshaw light the Africa’s tallest Xmas tree. The event will open the annual one month-long Calabar Festival, which has become a world class event. The Calabar Carnival attracts tourists from all over the world who throng the city for the occasion.
The Christmas tree-lighting ceremony is definitely going to be an epic event. The Festival will be witnessed and declared open by the state Governor, Senator Liyel Imoke at the Calabar Municipality Council grounds. But the Saturday’s event holds at the Millennium Park in Calabar.
Other stars confirmed to grace the event are Gideon Okeke and Ihuoma Nwigwe. Top comedian, Akpororo is also billed to crack the ribs of guests.
The tree-lighting ceremony will be followed by the Paradise City Walk against HIV/AIDS the next day, while

ASUU: Police Deploys More Officers To Universities Across The Country

Following an ultimatum the Federal Government gave to striking lecturers, the police announced it was deploying more officers to university campuses across the country.
The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, said this Thursday evening in a statement issued by the police spokesperson, Frank Mba.

"This is designed to help secure life and property in the Ivory Towers and provide enabling environment for lecturers, students, academic and non-academic staff to go about their lawful businesses without let or hindrance," Abubakar's statement said.

10 hours before that, the Acting Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, had told the ASUU hey had one week to resume.
The police boss also directed all Command Commissioners of Police to personally oversee the intensification of surveillance activities around universities within their State Commands.
In the statement, the police advised lecturers and students within the Institutions to abide by the law and go about their legitimate businesses without fear of molestation or intimidation from any quarters.

Rapper was rushed to Los Angeles hospital late Tuesday night.

Lil Wayne was back in a Los Angeles hospital on Tuesday after suffering from another seizure. The 30-year-old Young Money boss, who revealed in March that he suffers from epilepsy,
 was taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital late Tuesday night by his bodyguards, according to TMZ.

Citing anonymous sources close to the rapper, the site reported that Weezy suffered a single seizure and was treated and released on Wednesday morning.

From ADETUTU FOLASADE-KOYI, Abuja Senate yesterday waded into the imbroglio between the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and private jet owners over an increase in charges on non-scheduled flights in the country.

Senate intervened through its Committee on Aviation and asked NAMA to suspend the new charges imposed on local and foreign registered private airline operators.

The decision was taken after operators claimed before the committee that they were not consulted before the introduction of the new price regime.

President Goodluck Jonathan stated that over 27,000 jobs have been created in the last two years through the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria (YouWIN) Programme.

He made the remark on November 25, 2013, Monday, while declaring open the third edition of the YouWIN Programme at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

Noting that Nigeria is one of those countries that have a very high percentage of vibrant and enterprising young people, the President said the Programme initially targeted the creation of over 80,000 jobs.

World Record For Christmas Lights Set

An Australian family has reclaimed their Guinness World Record by stringing up more than half a million Christmas lights around their suburban home.

Guinness World Records official Chris Sheedy confirmed Monday that the Richards family of Canberra set the record for Christmas lights on a residential property with 502,165 twinkling bulbs.

The family first entered the famous record book in 2001 with 331,038 multi-colored lights. But they were trumped last year by a family in LaGrangeville, New York, who illuminated their home with 346,283 lights.

Aircraft Crashes In Ilorin

Three crew members on board a training aircraft of International Aviation College, Ilorin, escaped death as the plane crashed during a routine exercise.

The incident occurred at about 11.33 a.m. today within the vicinity of Ilorin International Airport.

The college's Acting Rector, Capt. Nuhu Abdulkareem, who announced the plane crash at a press conference in Ilorin, said it was the first recorded incident since its inception.

Abdulkareem said the three crew members of the single engine Diamond aircraft with registration number 5N-BRD were later taken to the college's clinic for proper check-up and were certified fit.He said the college had established contact with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and the Accident

G7 Governors Agree To Dump PDP and Move To APC

The crisis rocking the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) seems to have finally reached a climax with the G-7 governors resolving to join the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). This comes barely 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan chose to ignore a planned meeting with the governors which was seen as a make or break meeting between them and the President.

Derrick Rose Injures Knee In Loss To Portland Trail Blazers

Sad news coming out of Chicago as Derrick Rose left tonight's game with a knee injury. The good news is that it isn't the same knee that kept him out the entire 2012-13 NBA season. Either way, it's news that no one wants to hear. Rose's return hadn't been the fairy-tale that we all hoped for thus far but he had time to set things straight. It'd be a shame if Rose was seriously injured tonight. Rose seemed more comfortable than he has been all year prior to leaving tonight's game late in the third quarter.

At that point he had 20 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Chicago Bulls tried their best without him but eventually lost the game 98-95 to the Portland Trail Blazers. Rose is scheduled to get an MRI tomorrow in Los Angeles. Hopefully the MRI will come back negative, restoring the hope that's currently on temporary hold while we all await further news.

4-year-old helps save mother’s life

Aiden Mitchell, a 4-year-old in Detroit has been credited with heroically saving his mother’s life. As reported by WJBK Fox 2 News, Aiden’s great uncle Gregory Mitchell made several calls to speak with Aiden’s mother, Angela, but grew suspicious when the little boy kept answering the phone.

Uncle Greg recalled, “I said, ‘Where’s your mom at?’ He said, ‘She’s asleep.’” But in fact, Aiden’s mother had fallen into a diabetic coma and it was just a matter of time until it could have become fatal.

Man Drowns In Lagos While Swimming To Win A Bet

A 25-year-old man, Toheeb Jimoh, has drowned in a Lagos river while reportedly swimming to win a bet.
He had allegedly bragged that he could swim the Lagos Lagoon from a particular point to the shore on Saturday evening.
It was learnt that when some people challenged his claim, he had allegedly dared them to place a bet. After the bet was placed, he reportedly went on a boat to the point and jumped into the lagoon hoping to swim to the shore.

Friends of the deceased, who had accompanied him on a boat, were said to have fled the scene after he did not make it out of the water.
The incident, which occurred at Aiyedun Street, Bariga, was said to have caused commotion among residents who trooped to the site, hoping to save Jimoh.
The corpse of Jimoh was said to have been recovered around 7pm same day and buried beside the water around 12am in line with the traditions.
Our correspondent learnt that the late Abeokuta, Ogun State indigene, had only recently gained admission into the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta before the tragedy struck.
